What managed IT actually costs in New Jersey
Most New Jersey IT providers will not publish a price, which makes it very hard to tell whether a quote is fair. Here are real numbers, what each tier should include, and the specific things to check before signing anything.
| Tier | Per user / month | What it should include |
|---|---|---|
| Helpdesk only | $95 - $125 | Support during business hours, basic monitoring, patching |
| Fully managed | $125 - $175 | Everything above plus backup, endpoint security, vendor management, a named engineer and quarterly reviews |
| Managed + security | $175 - $225 | Everything above plus MFA rollout, email protection, phishing simulation, staff training and compliance evidence |
| Per-server add-on | $150 - $400 each | Monitoring, patching and backup for each physical or virtual server |
| Project work | $150 - $225 / hour | Migrations and one-off builds, normally quoted as a fixed price |
What should already be included, and often is not
- Backup AND a tested restore - scheduling a backup is not the same as proving it works
- Endpoint security licensing, rather than billed separately later
- Vendor management - someone else arguing with your ISP
- Onboarding and offboarding staff, at no extra charge per person
- Quarterly reporting in plain English
Pricing traps worth checking before you sign
- Per-device instead of per-user pricing - one person with a laptop and a phone can be billed twice
- 'Unlimited support' with an excluded list long enough to cover most real requests
- Onboarding fees that appear only after you have agreed the monthly rate
- Three-year lock-ins with no exit for poor service
- After-hours support billed hourly on top of a 'fully managed' fee
- Backup priced per gigabyte, which grows silently for years
How to compare two quotes fairly
- Convert everything to cost per user per month, including one-off fees spread over the term
- Ask both providers what is explicitly NOT included, in writing
- Ask for their actual average response time last quarter, not the contractual promise
- Ask who your named engineer would be, and whether you can talk to them first
Common questions
Why do most IT providers hide their pricing?
Partly because scope genuinely varies, and partly because it makes comparison harder. Ranges are perfectly publishable, which is why we publish ours.
Is per-user or per-device pricing better?
Per-user is almost always better for you. People routinely have a laptop, a phone and sometimes a desktop; per-device pricing charges for each one while the support burden follows the person.
What should a 20-person New Jersey business budget?
At $125 to $175 per user per month, roughly $2,500 to $3,500 a month for fully managed support, plus any server add-ons. Add security tooling if it is not already bundled.
